Gwinnett County’s 176,000 students go back to school today with nearly 3,000 more than last year.

The school district is opening four brand new schools this year including a high school, middle school, and two elementary schools.  Students at Summerour Middle School will also return to a replacement facility.

School district spokesman Bernard Watson tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish the new Discovery High School will focus on business and finance.

“We have the Clyde L. Strickland Entrepreneur Center which will allow students to come in and learn how to be entrepreneurs,” he says.  “We teach entrepreneurship but we’re really creating entrepreneurs.”

In addition, the school will house the new Junior Achievement Discovery Center at Gwinnett which will provide 6th and 8th graders an opportunity to learn more about consumer education and personal finance.

“It’s beautiful (and) it’s very functional in terms of the programs that will be here,” says Gwinnett Schools Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks.

The new high school, whose mascot is the Titans, will offer relief in the Central Gwinnett, Berkmar, Meadowcreek, and Brookwood clusters.

Students in Clayton, Fulton and DeKalb also return to class today
