MILTON, Ga. — A father from Cumming is disputing allegations he was driving drunk with his son in the car while speeding through a school zone.
Milton police arrested Scott Meyer last week on speeding, DUI and DUI child endangerment charges.
A dash cam video obtained by Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik shows Meyer’s car drive past an officer doing a traffic detail on Birmingham Highway.
“The speed is what drew the attention to the officer,” said Capt. Shawn McCarty, with the Milton Police Department.
On the dash cam, Meyer can be heard apologizing to the officer.
“I’m sorry, I was late to get the kids,” he said.
McCarty said the officer suspected Meyer might be under the influence of alcohol, so he questioned him about that, but Meyer denied having had anything to drink.
“I picked up my son from school,” Meyer told the officer. “Been to work, got to pick up my daughter, pick up my other daughter, and then head off to baseball practice and softball practice.”
After police said Meyer failed a field sobriety test, he was arrested and booked into the North Fulton County Jail annex in Alpharetta, and the child turned over to a friend of the family.
“The speed compounded with the driver’s state of mind, being under the influence, makes a not safe situation even more dangerous,” said McCarty.
When Petchenik went to Meyer’s home to get his side of the story, Meyer met him outside. He told Petchenik he was not drunk that day and that he felt the officer was having a bad day and was out to prove something.
He said he planned to fight the charges in court.
