A former director of elections for Cherokee County has been sentenced to eight years after pleading guilty to using a county credit card for unauthorized purchases.

Janet Munda, 56, of Cumming must serve 30 days in jail, with the remainder of her sentence on probation, The Cherokee Tribune reported.

Cherokee County Superior Court Judge Jackson Harris also ordered Munda to pay a $1,000 fine and $864 in restitution.

Munda was accused of using her county credit card for personal charges, including her home power bill, clothing and groceries, Cherokee sheriff's Lt. Jay Baker said. She was arrested in January following a six-month investigation.

Munda was fired from her position as the county’s director of elections in July. She pleaded guilty to theft by taking on April 16.
