A former Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputy has been indicted on charges she falsely requested military leave, for which she was paid.

The indictment claims that Brittany Martin shifted from active duty reserve status to inactive reserve status with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2012, meaning she was no longer eligible for paid military leave, District Attorney Shannon Wallace said.

Martin allegedly never disclosed the status change to the sheriff’s office and claimed she was ordered to attend drills in 2013 and was paid $1,824 for leave.

Martin was fired and arrested in December and now faces charges of theft by deception and violation of oath of public office. She’d worked in the county’s adult detention center since 2009.
