Flashback Photos: Remembering the 2010 Haiti earthquake

Elissa Benzie, who was an Atlanta Journal-Constitution photographer, provided readers with a firsthand look at the destruction.

The airport is completely empty and damaged from the earthquake. Only media, military personal, emergency workers and evacuees are allowed to enter. 100116 Port-au-Prince-Rene Dimanche moans with pain whispering "why" on the ground at the Adventist Auditorium in Port-au-Prince Saturday. Her family said her house fell on her during the earthquake and that she needs to go to the hospital. An exhausted rescue worker takes a break on the side of Hotel Montana. The hotel is billed as being away from the turbulent city of Port-au-Prince built a top the city looking down. It struck me that there were more rescue workers on the scene searching for survivors here than I had seen all over the city that was in ruins everywhere you looked. The earthquake did not care if you were rich or poor, but perhaps in the end it did matter.

This image was also taken at the Airport International Toussaint Louverture. This man was badly burned in the earthquake and military personnel were treating him on the tarmac. It was disturbing to see this man on the verge of dying right next to a line of evacuees who were perfectly fine. It seems so unfair, so wrong. Elissa Eubanks, eeubanks@ajc.com

This market was one of the largest markets in the city and it was bustling with people at the time of the earthquake. It was a place people gathered to watch rescues all the days we were there. On this day, there was not a rescue happening and people would just walk by and stare. The streets were filled with people walking. I am not sure where they were going but everyone was waking, just waking and looking, just looking. Elissa Eubanks, eeubanks@ajc.com
