The first court appearance is set for a man accused of slamming head-on into another vehicle Tuesday after a police chase through southeast Atlanta.

Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said Rodney Perkins’ first appearance is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Franka Young said the pursuit began at I-20 and Hill Street when a GSP trooper attempted to stop Perkins for cutting through the gore area of an interstate ramp.

Young said the chase ended at the intersection of Hank Aaron Drive and Milton Avenue when Perkins struck another vehicle head-on.

Perkins, 48, of Atlanta, attempted to flee on foot, but was taken into custody by the trooper, Young said.

She said Perkins was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, while the woman driving the other vehicle was taken to Atlanta Medical Center.

Perkins was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude, failure to stop at a stop sign, running red lights, driving while unlicensed, reckless driving, hit and run, passing on the shoulder of the roadway and theft by receiving stolen property, Young said.

He also has a court date in April on unrelated charges, Flanagan said.
