A two-alarm fire ripped through a Clarkston apartment building Saturday, collapsing the roof and causing residents to flee, Channel 2 Action News reported.

No one was injured, but the eight-unit building located in the 6000 block of Baynes Hill Drive is a total loss, according to the DeKalb County Fire Department. All residents have been displaced by the fire.

Firefighters arrived around 3 p.m. and initially tried to fight the blaze from inside the building. Then the roof caved in.

“We had to go defensive,” DeKalb County Fire Chief Kenneth McKinney said.

Witnesses described a frantic scene to Channel 2 Action News of people running from the building on their own or being rescued.

“There was a lady, her kids was stuck in the apartment and some guy ran in to go get the kids,” said Anthony Sanders, who lives in a neighboring building.

Ayak Deng, who lives next door, said a woman came out screaming that she’d had food cooking on the stove and fallen asleep.

Fire investigators are still working to learn the cause of the blaze, according to the news station.
