A north Fulton County family escaped uninjured Thursday from a predawn fire that heavily damaged their million-dollar Sandy Springs home.

Channel 2 Action News reported that that five people and two dogs were inside the $1.3-million house on Stella Drive when the fire broke out. All made it out safely.

The homeowner told Channel 2 that his mother-in-law alerted the sleeping family to the fire just after midnight.

Firefighters from Sandy Springs and Atlanta were able to contain the fire mostly to the attic area of the home, but were still on the scene six hours later dousing hot spots.

Sandy Springs fire spokesman Tony Brown said arriving crews found “heavy fire” coming from the back of the house.

“We were able to confirm that the family was out of the home, so that was one less thing that we had to worry about,” Brown told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We had crews making entry through the front of the house, making their way up to the attic,” he said. “Eventually, we had to back the interior crews out because it became no longer safe for them to stay inside the attic.”

Brown said crews got the fire under control with an exterior attack.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
