Usually, Atlanta is one hot mess by mid-August.

As steamy days fade into muggy nights, we are usually asking by now if it’s ever going to be fall.

But not this year. In a summer where the rain never seems to go away, unseasonal weather has cooled things down drastically.

If you can’t remember it ever being so cool in August, you’re right. Friday’s high temperature of 67 degrees set a record for the coolest Aug. 15 on the books, the National Weather Service reports. The previous record of 70 degrees stood from 1892.

“The reason for this cool weather is a cold front pushed south of Atlanta and an east wind is pushing in cool air,” according to Brad Nitz, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist. “At the same time, tropical moisture is streaming up from the tropics. This tropical moisture travels above the cool surface air and this brings us the low clouds and drizzle.”

It’s a typical weather pattern for Atlanta — in the fall and winter. But it’s unusual this time of year, Nitz said.

No need to grab the sweaters just yet. There’s a slight chill in the air now, but it won’t last long, Nitz said.

Those steamy afternoons? It should be back in the mid-80s by next mid-week.
