A Cartersville woman who was one of six victims of Tuesday’s shooting at the Kennesaw FedEx facility has been identified and continues to recover at a hospital.
Channel 2 Action News reports that Melissa Shadow, 52, was seriously wounded when co-worker Geddy Kramer, 19, walked in with a shotgun and opened fire, wounding six people before fatally shooting himself.
Shadow came into Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with birdshot wounds to her neck, torso and legs, trauma surgeon Dr. Barry Renz told Channel 2. “She’s doing very, very well also. She’s recovering from her surgery and will probably be going home in the next couple of days,” he said.
Security guard Christopher Sparkman, 28, was the most seriously wounded in the shooting. Sparkman had a “close-range shotgun blast to his left side of his abdomen with multiple injuries, intestinal injuries, soft-tissue injuries and organ injuries and he was basically bleeding to death,” Renz told Channel 2.
Renz said, after multiple surgeries, Sparkman is making a quick recovery.
“The birdshot is as devastating as anything else close-range, but if you step back and get further away, it’s really not all that bad,” Renz told Channel 2. “(Shadow) was a little further away from the shotgun, so the pellets were spread over her torso from the top of her chest to her knees, basically. She had pellets inside her chest, her abdomen and her thighs.”
Four other victims, who have not been identified, were treated and released.
