The FBI has arrested a Cleveland, Ga. man for allegedly running a fraud scheme, and agents are now trying to learn how many victims there may be.

Elmer Swain Stewart, 64, was arrested on Feb. 12 at his home on federal charges of wire fraud.

Stewart allegedly took money from people who thought they were investing in timber rights and other real estate opportunities. But the deals do not exist, according to the charges.

The FBI said documents that were recently seized indicate there are other victims who may not know that Stewart has been arrested or what connection the case has to any business deals they have with him.

“There is a concern that there are numerous other as yet unidentified victims …” the FBI said. They reside mainly in the Gainesville area, the FBI said.

Agents are asking that anyone who believes they may be a victim of a fraud scheme involving Stewart, or who has information about the case, call the FBI Atlanta field office at 404-679-9000.
