Fatal traffic accidents are tragic enough, but the one this week in Athens involving Christopher Tyler Evans of Newborn is expected to leave emotional scars for years to come.
"This is a story that just got sadder," Athens-Clarke police Lt. Don Eckert told The Athens Banner-Herald. "It was a tough accident to work."
According to a police account, Evans, a 37-year-old Newton County husband and father, was killed Monday on Timothy Road around 6:10 p.m. when the 2003 Cadillac CTS his wife, Sabrina, was driving northward made a left turn into the path of a southbound 2000 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 16-year-old. The teenager, who was not identified, struck the passenger side of Evans’ vehicle, killing him.
The accident occurred on the day Evans and his 35-year-old wife celebrated their wedding anniversary, the Banner-Herald reported. They were spending part of their anniversary taking their sons, 7-year-old Joel and 5-year-old Chase, to Georgia Square Mall so the boys could deliver their Christmas lists to Santa Claus.
In addition to the holiday, December is also an exciting month because the boys celebrate their birthdays just before Christmas Day, on Dec. 21 and 23, according to the Banner-Herald.
The 16-year-old, a student at Oconee County High School, was on his way home from a job at a nursing home Monday when the accident occurred, the Banner-Herald said. He suffered abrasions. Evans’ wife and two sons were treated at Athens Regional Medical Center and released that night, police said.
Police said no charges have been filed, pending completion of the investigation.
