An actor whose first major television credit came in 2003 recently attempted to “school” actor/comedian Marlon Wayans on his own success.

The educational moment brought to Instagram by actor/television host Terrence J did not go over well with fans of Wayans and his famous family. Terrence J and Wayans now say the conversation was all in jest.

In an Instagram Live, Terrence J, who has acted in "Sherman's Showcase" and "Think Like a Man," began shouting at Wayans, who starred in his own eponymous NBC show and the iconic show "The Wayans Bros." about how Wayans' success was only due to his famous family. Wayans' brother Keenen Ivory Wayans created the iconic sketch show "In Living Color." Several siblings, including Marlon, Damon Wayans and Kim Wayans, starred on the show and have gone on to find success in television and film.

Terrence J, whose real name is Terrence Jenkins, appeared to be inviting Wayans to learn about how some folks make it in Hollywood without having a family connection. Jenkins, 38, first came into the spotlight as a video jockey on BET’s “106 and Park.”

“Listen, let me just school you on something, man, this ain’t all about your family, your family can’t bail you out of this one, all right. There’s other people in the world that are not Wayans’ people,” he said.

Wayans retorted back, giving his family reverence for showing him the ropes in the entertainment business.

“Let me tell you something about family; I don’t ever need them to bail me out of nothing,” Marlon said. “They raised me, if you ever think I’m great because of me, you’re wrong. I’m great because of the tribe that raised me. You’re gonna respect the tribe,” he said.

Jenkins began shouting and barking at Wayans as they both interrupted each other.

Jenkins went on to say that many actors have to make it on their own. He also told Wayans to “Get off of Keenen Ivory Wayans’ lap for two seconds.”

The two actors went on to battle about who supports black businesses and designers most often between them. Wayans posted an apology from Jenkins.

“I think the family is incredible. Icons in the game,” Jenkins said in an Instagram post Thursday. “Love all day to the Wayans, especially Marlon who is the funniest.”

Wayans can be seen jokingly holding a gun in the video, appearing to present the apology and previous conversation as a joke. Marlon says in a burly voice “don’t do that (expletive) no more.”

The argumentative social video got many folks responding with support for the Wayans family and disdain for Terrence J.

Many folks felt like the diss at Keenen Ivory Wayans was also disrespectful because he helped start the careers of Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx and others.
