Late rapper Mac Miller’s estate announced Wednesday that the Grammy-nominated lyricist’s “Circles” will be released posthumously next week.
The new album will be released as a companion album to his critically acclaimed “Swimming,” according to a statement posted by Genius on Twitter. It’s slated to drop Jan. 17.
Mac, whose real name is Malcolm McCormick, released his last album “Swimming” in August 2018. Weeks later, the 26-year-old was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Sept. 7, 2018. A coroner’s report later revealed that the beloved rapper died from an accidental drug overdose. He was slated to tour for that album in fall 2018.
The family’s statement describes the new material as a different style than his last album, but for listeners it will be a musical act of “completing the circle.”
“...Swimming in Circles was the concept,” reads the family’s statement. “He had been working with Jon Brion, who after hearing some early version of songs, cleared his calendar to help Malcolm fine-tune them...We are eternally grateful to Jon and those who gave their best to the difficult and emotional task of putting out this body of work.”
The announcement of new music from the “Self Care” rapper, who collaborated with Snoop Dogg, J. Cole and Syd of The Internet, was received with adulation by some Wednesday.
A few fans questioned whether the album, released with little input from Mac before his death, would reflect the rapper’s musical vision.
