The decision to end the show is not unsurprising because DeGeneres’ current contract ends in 2022.
DeGeneres informed the show’s staff Tuesday, and she will discuss the news with predecessor and friend Oprah Winfrey on “Ellen’s” show Thursday.

Speaking about the decision publicly for the first time, DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter, “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.”

The last year was not great for the Ellen DeGeneres brand, as a July BuzzFeed News exposé detailed allegations of a toxic workplace and sparked controversy.
“When you're a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it's just not a challenge anymore."
The exposé prompted an internal investigation and the dismissal of key executives.
Season 18 of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” opened in September, with DeGeneres offering an apology to viewers: “I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously. And I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.”
