An elderly middle Georgia couple died in a house fire early Sunday, just one day after an elderly Fayette County couple were killed in another deadly fire.
Herschel S. Odum, 79, and his 75-year-old wife, Elizabeth Odum, died when their Jeffersonville home caught fire around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, according to Glenn Allen, spokesman for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens.
Allen said the fire was ruled accidental, sparked by an electrical malfunction.
So far this year, 36 Georgians have died in residential fires, including Lamar R. Beckwith, 94, and his 88-year-old wife, Catherine N. Beckwith.
The Beckwiths died in a massive Saturday afternoon fire at their home on Biltmore Drive in Fayette County. That fire also was sparked by an electrical malfunction, according to Allen.
