East Point police peacefully resolved a situation with a possibly mentally disturbed man Friday.

The man’s family had contacted a mental health crisis hotline because they feared his mental state had deteriorated and that he was suicidal, East Point police Lt. Cliff Chandler told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The hotline called police because the man had a gun. When police arrived at the apartment complex, the man initially refused to come out, and Fulton County SWAT was called, Chandler said.

A police negotiator coaxed the man from his apartment after about two hours, Chandler said.

Police found a gun in the house, and the man was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for mental evaluation, Chandler said.
