Two Chatham County sheriff’s deputies have been placed on administrative leave with pay during an investigation into an inmate’s death.

Cpls. Jason Kenny and Maxine Evans are on leave following the Jan. 1 death of 22-year-old Matthew Ajibade, the sheriff’s office said.

Ajibade allegedly was combative while being booked into the Chatham County jail on charges of domestic violence act, battery and obstruction. A female sergeant suffered a concussion and a broken nose, while two male deputies suffered injuries consistent with an affray, Wayne Wermuth, spokesman for the sheriff’s office said.

Neither of the suspended deputies were injured, the Savannah Morning News reported. Evans has worked at the sheriff's office since 2000, Kenny since 2006.

Ajibade was placed in isolation, where he was later found unresponsive. He was unable to be revived. The GBI is conducting an autopsy to determine how he died.

Ajibade’s family said he suffered from bipolar disorder and needed medical treatment.
