Delta Air Lines has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation to add more nonstop flights to Brazil from Atlanta and New York. The flights would be to Sao Paulo, the most populous city in the country and in South America.
If approved, Delta said it will add second daily Sao Paulo flights to both Atlanta and New York this year.
“Our expanded service means more options for customers flying between these key business markets, and new flights to our hub in Atlanta mean greater access to our industry-leading domestic network,” Nicolas Ferri, Delta’s vice president— Latin America and the Caribbean, said in a statement.
Atlanta-based Delta currently operates 35 nonstop weekly flights between Brazil and the U.S. The flights are from Atlanta, Detroit and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Sao Paulo and from Atlanta to Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.
Delta also is requesting that it be allowed to continue nonstop flights from Detroit to Sao Paulo after its current right transfers to U.S. Airways in 2015. The transfer is part of deal that allowed Delta to expand its presence at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
