Life is slowly getting back to normal for some in DeKalb County after the winter storm that gripped Georgia this week.

The county’s warming centers and its emergency shelter will close Thursday night, and government services will resume Friday morning, county officials announced.

County offices will reopen at 10 a.m. Friday and garbage collection will operate on a modified schedule, according to a news release from county authorities.

The warming centers, in Tucker and Decatur, will close at 10 p.m. Thursday, as will the emergency shelter at the Gresham Park Recreation Center.

The sanitation department will collect residential trash, but not yard trimmings and recycling, for the remainder of the week, county officials said. Monday is a county holiday and residential trash collection will resume Tuesday and follow the holiday schedule.

Residential and commercial trash pickup that normally happens on Tuesday will be collected Friday. Commercial collections scheduled for Wednesday will be picked up Saturday, as will residential and commercial trash regularly picked up on Thursday. Residential garbage normally picked up on Friday will be collected Sunday, as will commercial trash that is scheduled for Friday and Saturday collection.

If some road conditions remain impassable, residents should call 404-294-2900 to report a missed pickup.

Lee May, the interim county chief executive, said residents returning to work should be careful as some hazardous conditions may still exist.

“We still have a few icy patches on the roads and the potential for falling ice and downed tree limbs, especially in subdivision with tree canopies,” May said in a news release. “I am urging everyone to exercise extreme care as they commute in these conditions.”
