DeKalb County police were still working Thursday to confirm the identity of a man shot and killed Wednesday at a motel near Stone Mountain.

Officers responding to the Stone Mountain Inn in the 1800 block of Mountain Industrial Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday found a man dead from a gunshot wound.

“According to the preliminary investigation, the victim and suspect were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated and the suspect pulled out a weapon and shot the victim,” DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

She said the suspect fled in a dark-colored Nissan.

Parish said late Thursday morning that the victim, who is believed to be in his mid-20s, has not been positively identified.
