A former DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy pleaded guilty to a simple battery charge for assaulting a suspect, the Fulton County District Attorney said Wednesday.
Dameco Moses, 36, was sentenced to 12 months on probation, must pay a $2,500 fine, and must forfeit his certification, meaning he will not be able to work in law enforcement, as part of a plea deal, DA Paul Howard said.
In June 2012, Moses participated in the arrest of Royce Cross, wanted on several probation violations, Howard's office said. During a half-mile ride from the arrest location to a staging area, Moses was seated in the back seat with Cross. That's when prosecutors said Moses punch Cross several times in the face.
“The victim was handcuffed, shackled and restrained by a seatbelt during the deputy’s assault,” Howard’s office said in an emailed statement.
Another deputy intervened and reported the assault to a supervisor. On June 28, 2012, Moses was arrested and booked into the Fulton County jail, records show.
Moses was initially placed on administrative leave and then terminated for his actions. He was indicted by a Fulton County grand jury and appeared in court this week.
Cross is currently in state prison, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
