One person died in a small plane crashed Monday night in Dawson County, the county’s sheriff’s office said.
Wreckage from the single-engine Piper Malibu PA-46 aircraft was found shortly after 9 p.m. on Auraria Road, less than a half-mile from Ga. 400, the FAA said.
The flight departed Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey and was headed to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport when air traffic controllers lost contact with the pilot shortly after 7 p.m., Kathleen Bergen, FAA spokeswoman, said late Monday.
Neither the pilot’s name nor the plane’s registration were immediately available. But the plane was registered in Georgia, Bergen said.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating the crash.
