Three people were killed and at least five more injured in a five-car accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer early Friday outside Gainesville, police said.

Around 1 a.m., police received the call of the multi-vehicle wreck on northbound Ga. 365 at Howard Road, Gainesville police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook told 95.5 FM WSB News/Talk Radio.

The tractor-trailer was “entangled with a number of vehicles,” Holbrook said.

The five people left injured by the wreck were in serious to critical condition, he said.

Authorities had not released the names of the three people killed.

All lanes were blocked until around 10 a.m. Friday on the roadway, which leads from I-985 just outside the downtown Gainesville area, WSB Radio reported.

Holbrook said firefighters had to clean up oil and fuel that spilled from the overturned tractor-trailer before crews could remove the other vehicles and upright the big rig.

It was a very extensive accident scene, he said, adding, “We are still trying to determine what caused the accident.”
