Before firefighters arrived at the scene of a burning house Sunday morning, a Conyers police officer had to act fast and pull a woman out of the smoke-filled home.
From the time officers were seen pulling up to the Willow Creek Court home at about 2:30 a.m., it took only about four minutes for an officer to break a window and get the victim out, body camera footage shows. The woman was taken to a hospital due to smoke inhalation but has since been released, police said.
The blaze began after a pot was left on the stove, the Rockdale County fire department confirmed. After causing extensive damage to the kitchen area, the fire spread into the attic.
When Conyers police officers were called to the house, they were unsure if anyone was inside, so they began to canvass the area. That’s when they noticed the woman banging on a window trying to get their attention, the video shows.
After realizing the window was not going to open, officers told the woman to move back and Senior Officer Smith was able to break through it.
With so much smoke filling the room, visibility was low and officers began calling out, hoping they would be guided toward the victim.
“Where are you at? Where you at?” Smith yelled. “Give me your hand ... reach out!”
Not long after, Smith jumped into the home through the window and was able to safely get the woman out of the house, the video shows. No officers were injured during the rescue, police said.
