Metro Atlanta will get a chance to dry out Thursday after two days of strong storms and severe weather across parts of the region.
No tornado damage was reported in the latest round of storms Wednesday night, but large hail and frequent lightning were concerns through the overnight hours. The storms are long gone Thursday morning, and Atlanta can look forward to sunshine and cooler conditions for the next few days, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.
“Improving weather is going to be our story headed through the weekend,” he said. “Yes, it’s going to be on the cool side, but you’re going to be OK for your outdoor plans. Just dress warmly today with clearing, breezy weather in the forecast.”
Atlanta’s projected high is well below average at just 67 degrees. Monahan said a breeze blowing in behind Wednesday’s cold front will make it feel even cooler outside.
“You’re going to notice it gusting up to 30 mph at times this afternoon,” he said.
It will be a chilly night at the ballpark as the Braves return to Truist Park for their home opener against the Cincinnati Reds. Monahan is expecting temperatures in the upper 50s by the time the first pitch is thrown at 8 p.m.
By the late innings, temperatures should drop back into the low 50s, he said. Wind chill will still be a factor, according to Monahan.
“Bring that championship sweatshirt,” he said. “It is going to get chilly as we get into that second half of the game, and headed home from a Braves win.”
Conditions will not be ideal Thursday for yardwork. Since Tuesday, the region has recorded 2 to 3 inches of rainfall, and the ground is soggy. Flood warnings remain in effect for Sweetwater Creek near Austell and Yellow River near Conyers, which have both reached flood stage.
It’s best to wait for the weekend to pull out the lawn mower, Monahan said.
“If you’ve got any yardwork to do, not the best day with all that wet weather we had yesterday, but Friday and Saturday will be a little bit better,” he said. “Sunday will be your best day this weekend to take care of that yardwork.”
Friday and Saturday come with slight chances of rain, and temperatures are not expected to leave the 50s both days. With sunshine and dry conditions in the forecast, temperatures will return to the upper 60s Sunday, according to Monahan.
