The springtime conditions metro Atlanta enjoyed this week come to an end Saturday. A cold front that moves in late tonight means cooler temps for the region and possible flurries for parts of North Georgia.

Atlanta is coming off a Friday that saw the high hover around 70. Temperatures tumbled down into the 40s overnight.

Dog lovers can expect to be greeted by sunrise lows of 43 degrees while taking their furry friends out for a morning walk, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz predicts.

But plan for a warmup by noon. The high for the day should reach 65 in town.

“Sun with just a few clouds as we head through the afternoon on Saturday,” Nitz said. “Temperatures warm ahead of a front. Southerly to southwesterly winds that pull us up into the mid- to upper-6os, just shy of 70 degrees.”

Don’t let the afternoon pleasant afternoon weather fool you. Bring a jacket if you plan to be outdoors after the sun sets.

Front winds coming down from Alabama and Tennessee will collide with a low-pressure system blowing into Georgia from out west late Saturday night.

That will mean windier conditions with cloudy skies, a small chance for scattered rain in metro Atlanta and possibly flurries in the North Georgia mountains.

That sets the stage for a brisk second half of the weekend, when temperatures are expected to fall into the low 30s and even 20s. The high for Sunday will be 47 degrees, according to Nitz.

“Behind this system, some much colder air comes in,” he said. “Overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, could be a few spots of drizzle.”

Out on the road, construction could slow you down if you have to travel on the interstate or major highways this weekend.

In Cobb County, lanes on Macland Road will be shut down in the morning to allow for a road resurfacing project, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

In another area of Cobb, crews were setting up cones along northbound lanes of I-75 on Saturday morning, according to traffic reports. They will close three right lanes between South Marietta Parkway and North Marietta Parkway. Drivers should take Cobb Parkway an alternate.

Fulton and DeKalb will see “rolling” lane closures in two-mile increments overnight all weekend on I-85 from Midtown to Clairmont Road. GDOT plans to replace the pavement markings on the road and install safety equipment.
