Feeling the effects of high gas prices and staff shortages, several metro Atlanta police departments are getting creative with new programs announced Friday.
In Roswell, a new patrol squad utilizes ostriches, faster than traditional mounted patrols at pursuing perps. In Duluth, a new K-9 has joined the police force and will begin cracking down on crime. He’s a corgi dog rather appropriately named “Spud.”
Believe that, and you may just be a fool. We’ve rounded up some of the best April Fools’ Day posts by metro Atlanta’s public safety agencies.
Roswell’s “Ostrich Mounted Group”
Roswell has dubbed their alternative patrol “Ostrich Mounted Group,” or O.M.G. for short. Ostriches are naturally equipped with a squawk feature which is set to replace a police car’s siren, the police department said, but they aren’t quite sure where to place the blue lights.
“Also horses are boring,” the department quipped on Facebook.
Pony patrol in South Fulton
South Fulton police joked that they are also testing out alternative patrolling methods. Ponies are their animal of choice, because ponies are more “down to Earth than horses.”
Duluth’s cutest K-9
It appears the Duluth Police Department is not immune to staff shortages brought on by the Great Resignation. As more traditional police dogs like German Shepherds leave the field, the department has started hiring corgis to fill the gap.
Police speculate their newest K-9, Spud, will be able to distract criminals with his cuteness.
Johns Creek police take aim at fire counterparts
The Johns Creek Police Department played an April Fools Day prank on the Johns Creek Fire Department by displaying a sign reading “Sshhhhh... Firemen sleeping,” outside a fire station.
Get out of jail for free in Oconee
Taking its cue from the classic “Monopoly” board game, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is providing one Get Out of Jail Free card for anyone with an outstanding warrant. All you have to do is show up at the county’s jail and present the card below to an arresting deputy. So easy!
Of course, none of the pranks are to be taken seriously and are all in good fun. Here are more jokes from across metro Atlanta.
