A man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at a northeast Atlanta apartment complex was arrested within hours of the killing Saturday when an officer spotted him trespassing at a nearby store, authorities said.

Atlanta police were called just before 8 a.m. to the Helios apartment complex in the 2400 block of Cheshire Bridge Road. The complex is a stone’s throw from I-85 and near where Cheshire Bridge Road turns into Lenox Road.

Officers found a man dead with several gunshot wounds and established a crime scene. He was identified as 29-year-old Leon Kaymore by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. No suspects were arrested, but police said homicide detectives were called to investigate the gunfire.

Later that day, and amid the police investigation, officers responded to a criminal trespass call at 2350 Cheshire Bridge Road, about a quarter-mile south of the complex. The address corresponds with a CVS store that is open 24 hours a day, according to its website.

When officers arrived, one of them came across the suspect, who was identified by police as 29-year-old Malik Jones. An officer then recognized Jones as a suspect involved in the earlier shooting at the apartment complex.

Malik Jones is charged with murder in connection with the killing in northeast Atlanta, police said.

Police said officers seized a “possible firearm used in the homicide” and Jones was placed into custody.

He was later booked into the Fulton County Jail on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, according to online records.

He is being held without bond.
