A man was arrested Friday in connection with a shooting in Athens that killed one teenager and injured another, police said.

Jeffery Rice, 26, is facing charges of murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a felon and three counts of violating the Georgia Criminal Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act in the Oct. 21 shooting.

Athens-Clarke County police initially said two teens were shooting at each other during an altercation in the 100 block of Gaines School Road. They were still trying to determine how many people were involved.

“Initial investigation indicates that the two subjects were known to each other and the shooting stemmed from a gang-related dispute,” police spokesman Lt. Shaun Barnett said at the time.

Alijah Nelson, 19, died from his injuries and an 18-year-old man was taken to a hospital, police said. As of Monday, Rice was the only person arrested in connection with the shooting, which remains under investigation.

Rice remains at the Clarke County Jail without bond.
