The GBI is investigating a shooting in Fayette County that left a U.S. marshal injured.

The GBI is investigating after a U.S. marshal was shot while arresting a Pike County murder suspect in Fayette County on Sunday, officials confirmed.

The shooting happened at a home in the 400 block of Sage Brush Trail at the Shiloh Mobile Home Ranch off Ga. 54 just outside Peachtree City. When officers entered the home, the suspect shot the marshal, according to the GBI. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times.

The marshal was taken to a hospital and was expected to be released later Sunday. He is a Coweta County sheriff’s investigator who is attached to the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the Coweta sheriff’s office.

Pike County officials identified the suspect as 19-year-old Antonio Murgado Jr. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, the GBI said.

Murgado is one of three suspects who has been charged in the shooting death of 19-year-old James Knight on July 16 during an apparent drug deal, according to Pike County investigators. A 14-year-old was arrested last week in connection with the deadly shooting, and an 18-year-old woman has also been charged.

Once the GBI completes its investigation into the Fayette County shooting, the case file will be given to the Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
