Decatur police ID man killed in hit-and-run as search continues for driver

A pedestrian was killed Monday night by a driver that didn't stop, according to Decatur police.

A 42-year-old man attempting to cross a busy Decatur street was struck and killed by a driver that didn’t stop, police said Tuesday.

Now, investigators need the public’s help to identify the driver.

The collision happened around 11:35 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Scott Boulevard and Clairemont Avenue, according to Decatur police. Investigators believe Ajay Patil of Decatur was hit by a westbound vehicle while he was attempting to cross Scott Boulevard.

Patil was in the crosswalk at the time, police said in a news release. He was seriously injured and died from his injuries at a local hospital, according to police. Patil did not have identification on him at the time of the crash but was identified Tuesday.

Investigators have not yet been able to determine the type of vehicle involved. A witness described seeing a white or light-colored compact vehicle in the area at the time of the incident.
