Three 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds have been arrested after a multi-jurisdictional pursuit through metro Atlanta following a carjacking Tuesday morning, police said.

DeKalb County police were looking for the group of teenagers after a woman reported being shot around 1:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of Willow Lake Drive, according to a joint news release from the involved law enforcement agencies.

Investigators believe the woman was inside her vehicle when she was approached by the armed suspects who were demanding her vehicle, the release states. She and the suspects exchanged gunfire, leaving her injured, authorities said.

The woman was taken to a hospital, and her injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to police. The suspects were not injured and did not take her car.

A short time later, Sandy Springs police got a call about a carjacking just before 3 a.m. at The Harrison apartments at 5675 Roswell Road, the news release states. The victim, who was not injured, told police that five suspects took his car at gunpoint with AK-47 style firearms.

Officers immediately alerted neighboring jurisdictions about the carjacked 2019 blue Kia Forte, and Brookhaven police spotted it soon after in the area of Briarcliff Road and Sheridan Road, according to the news release. A pursuit ensued, which continued into Chamblee and ended on Chamblee Tucker Road near I-85 around 4:30 a.m. when the suspects lost control of the vehicle, causing it to become disabled.

All five suspects were taken into custody and turned over to DeKalb police. Two weapons also were recovered, the release states.

Kevin Hernandez and Manuel Hernandez, both 17, were among the suspects, according to police. The three 16-year-olds have not been identified. They face charges of attempted carjacking and aggravated assault in DeKalb, but their other charges have not been released.
