DeKalb County police have made a second arrest in a fatal shooting at a Stone Mountain gas station during Memorial Day weekend.

Kory Powell, 31, was gunned down shortly after midnight May 31 at a Chevron in the 4700 block of Redan Road, according to police.

Authorities arrested one of the suspected shooters Wednesday after spotting the man near Ashton Oak Circle, about a block west of the gas station. Officers took Justin Jaquez Stafford, a 23-year-old Stone Mountain man, into custody without incident, police announced on social media Friday.

Stafford was charged with malice murder and felony tampering with evidence. He remained in custody at the DeKalb County Jail without bond Friday, online booking records show.

His alleged accomplice, 17-year-old Brandon Joseph, was arrested on a charge of malice murder June 1, less than 24 hours after the shooting. The Stone Mountain teenager was also being held without bond Friday.

Police did not release details about the May 31 shooting at the Chevron, located at the intersection of Hairston Road. Officers responded and found Powell with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to police.

There is no word on what led to the shooting or how investigators tied the two suspects to the deadly incident.

It came in the midst of a violent holiday weekend that saw at least 14 people shot and four people killed in metro Atlanta.

Powell’s loved ones created a GoFundMe page days after his shooting. Farewell messages and donations continued to pour in until last month.

“Kory was a sweet, loving person that will give his shirt off his back to anyone,” Vivian Powell, who organized the online fundraising campaign, wrote on the page. “He was loved and well respected in the community.”
