Tyquan Samuel, 31, faces 10 charges, including DUI, causing serious injury by vehicle, first-degree homicide and possession of more than one ounce of marijuana, according to Gwinnett County Jail records.

Samuel was driving south on Buford Drive on July 14 when he allegedly lost control of his 2001 green BMW 325I and crossed the median, according to a Gwinnett County police incident report obtained by AJC.com.

He sideswiped a 2015 Audi Q7 before continuing and striking a 2018 Ford Focus driven by Sinee Hicks of Lawrenceville, the report said.

A 2010 Toyota Camry was unable to stop and struck the passenger side of Hicks’ car, the report said.

Samuel’s car caught on fire, but first responders were able to extricate him, the report said. A fifth vehicle suffered some cosmetic damage from the flames and burning debris.

Samuel was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center of Lawrenceville with life-threatening injuries, the report said. The drivers of the Q7 and Camry both also were taken to the hospital.

Because the 325I was close to Hicks’ Focus, she was burned and was trapped inside her vehicle, the report said. She had to be extricated by fire personnel when they arrived at the scene.

Hicks was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with burns on 60 percent of her body, and she was pronounced brain dead nearly a week later on July 20 due to her injuries.

She died July 22, according to a subsequent incident report obtained by AJC.com. Channel 2 Action News reported that she had a 2-year-old daughter.

After Samuel recovered from his injuries and was released from the hospital, he was arrested and booked in the Gwinnett County Jail on Wednesday, jail records show. He has been denied bond.

Channel 2 Action News reported that Samuel had previously been bonded out of jail on marijuana and battery charges about a month before this incident.

An investigation is ongoing.
