A 14-year-old boy will be charged with arson in the first degree in connection with a fire that destroyed part of an apartment complex in DeKalb County on Thursday night.
DeKalb Fire and Rescue Capt. Eric Jackson said Friday that police will seek charges against the juvenile after an investigator determined the fire, which left at least five families displaced, was started intentionally.
The boy’s name was not released.
Firefighters responded to a call at the Spring Valley Apartments in the 2800 block of Misty Valley Drive around 6:45 p.m. on Thursday. Crews put out the fire within an hour after dispatching about 45 firefighters to the scene and using aerial ladders.
Two people were injured in the blaze — one who suffered from smoke inhalation and another who hurt a foot when jumping out of a window. Both were stable and being treated as of Thursday night, Jackson said.
Six apartment units were affected, three of which were heavily damaged by smoke and fire. Jackson said at least five families were displaced.
