A 16-year-old Athens high school student has been charged with misdemeanor statutory rape after he allegedly had sex with a 15-year-old girl on campus, police said Friday.

The sexual encounter happened at Clarke Central High School this week, police said in a news release.

School system officials contacted Athens-Clarke County police after they viewed surveillance video of the encounter, according to the release.

The incident occurred in a school stairwell during school hours, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

The case is now with the Athens-Clarke County Juvenile Court system, police said.
