Several DeKalb County first responders were on the scene of a wreck Sunday on I-285 when they became crash victims, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“It was the closest I’ve been to dying in the 19 years I've been working,” DeKalb fire Capt. Tremayne McMurray said.

McMurray and his firetruck were stopped with DeKalb police, a HERO unit and a wrecker when a tractor-trailer pulling a cheesesteak stand — and hundreds of pounds of propane — came crashing in, the news station reported.

The truck was driven by carnival worker Charles Zuschlag, authorities said. The crash damaged the firetruck, which is worth more than $500,000. The door was torn off, the windshield was shattered and a pull bar was ripped from its hinges.

“This piece of apparatus is going to be out an extended period of time,” DeKalb fire Capt. Eric Jackson said, “and it's going to cost thousands of dollars to get repaired.”

A reserve truck will be put into use until the damaged one is fixed.

As for Zuschlag, the charges against him include operating an unsafe vehicle and no registration or insurance, Channel 2 reported.
