A Henry County woman has been indicted on charges she falsely accused a police officer of sexually assaulting her during an arrest.

Cindy Dossette Smith, 60, was arrested in January after her neighbors in the Birch Creek Circle area of McDonough reported the woman for knocking on several doors. She had been involved in a domestic dispute, according to the GBI.

Smith was arrested by a Henry County officer on a charge of disorderly conduct related to public intoxication. When she got to the county jail, she claimed the officer sexually assaulted her.

That never happened, a grand jury later found.

Smith was immediately taken for a medical examination following her arrest on Jan. 3. The GBI was called in at the request of police Chief Mark Amerman “to be open and transparent,” Henry County police spokesman Capt. Joey Smith said.

Investigators conducted interviews with witnesses and reviewed footage. The officer’s body and dash cameras recorded the officer’s entire interaction with the woman, including Smith’s ride to jail, the GBI said.

The evidence was presented to a Henry County grand jury, and Smith was indicted on May 16.

“Of course we are pleased with the outcome of the investigation,” the police spokesman told AJC.com.

Smith is accused of two felony counts of making false statements. She was being held Thursday in the Henry County Jail.
