Oct 3, 2019

A man accused of stealing a purse from a woman near the Beltline was run down and pinned to the ground by multiple witnesses until police arrived, authorities said.

The incident began Sunday when a woman was about to get into a Lyft on Montag Circle in Inman Park when a man grabbed her from behind, lifted her up and stole her purse, Channel 2 Action News reported. She was allegedly thrown to the ground during the attack.

Timothy Sherod, the alleged thief, then ran onto the Beltline, but two men who witnessed the incident gave chase, Channel 2 reported. Atlanta police released bodycam video of the arrest, which shows the men hold down Sherod until an officer put him in handcuffs.

Police advise against chasing someone who committed a crime, since there’s many unknowns with potentially violent suspects. However, the department told Channel 2 it’s grateful Sherod didn’t get away in this instance.
