A Clayton County man is behind bars after stealing televisions from Walmart and leading deputies on a chase on Ga. 400 in a U-Haul, authorities said.

Stephen Hutchins, 37, of Conley, was arrested on a host of charges Sunday following the incident in Forsyth County.

The chase began when deputies responded to the Walmart on Atlanta Highway after getting calls about a shoplifting suspect. Police were told a man loaded TVs into a U-Haul truck before heading north on Ga. 400.

Authorities placed spike strips on the roadway, which slowed the moving truck down. One deputy attempted to pin the U-Haul between their cruiser and the guardrail, but the truck was able to squeeze by and the chase continued, dashboard footage shows.

Hutchins exited at Ga. 369 before coming to a stop in a grassy area in front of a Bojangles and running on foot, authorities said. He then ran into the Walgreens parking lot, where body camera footage shows at least one deputy using his Taser on the man.

Hutchins is charged with theft by shoplifting, possession of cocaine, possession of drug related objects, driving under the influence of multiple substances, obstruction, fleeing and attempting to elude for a felony offense, aggressive driving and driving with a suspended or revoked license, jail records show.

He remains held at the Forsyth County Jail on a $35,940 bond.
