Cellphone video that appears to show a student being kicked and beaten by an older student at school was obtained by Channel 2 Action News Friday.
The incident happened at Lithonia Middle School as students were waiting to be picked up, Channel 2 reported.
The video, which was taken by a student, allegedly shows a 12-year-old seventh grader being attacked by a 15-year-old eighth grader on Oct. 17. The mother of the 12-year-old told the news station she’s furious about how the students were supervised, since no school staff member saw the incident.
“You didn’t see any teachers, no admins, no security — anything could have happened to him, and no one was there to help,” the mother, who asked Channel 2 to remain anonymous, said.
She told the news station the older student hit her son first from behind. Then the punches and kicks continued, while other students recorded it.
“His nose was bleeding,” she said. “When he got home, he had swelling on each side of his head. He has not been able to sleep since this happened.”
A DeKalb County School District spokesperson sent Channel 2 a statement that said, in part: “Acts of violence will never be tolerated in our schools. The DeKalb County School District’s student code of conduct was followed as a result of the incident.”
The spokesperson told the news station that it can’t get into specifics about the punishment handed to the attacker in the video. The district’s investigation into the incident is ongoing.
