One person was killed Tuesday night in a fiery single-car crash in DeKalb County, police said.

The medical examiner’s office originally identified the victim as a 41-year-old man from Lilburn. They later retracted that after family members of the man contacted them. Officials have not released the actual victim’s name.

According to DeKalb police Maj. Stephen Fore, a 2006 Hyundai Sonata was traveling west on Memorial Drive about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday when the car veered to the left and hit a bridge pillar at the East Ponce de Leon Avenue overpass.

“It is believed the vehicle immediately burst into flames,” Fore said. “Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and driver was unrecognizable.”

The car and the driver’s body were taken to the medical examiner’s office so the body could be removed, Fore said.
