What detectives first thought was a carjacking turned shooting actually turned out to be a gun sale gone bad, DeKalb County police said Wednesday.

One man shot the driver of a pickup truck Tuesday afternoon. He then drove a passenger to the Whitney Chase Apartments near Young and Chase roads, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

The driver was in stable condition after being shot in the leg, but the gunman later shot the passenger, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition, DeKalb police spokesman Maj. Stephen Fore said. Police dogs tracked and captured the alleged shooter within the hour.

“The shooter is still in Grady and has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon,” Fore said.

Both victims were still in the hospital Wednesday as well.

Fore said police will release the shooter’s name once his identity is verified and the sheriff’s office takes custody of him.
