Shierling, who was from Leesburg, studied business and real estate, a university spokeswoman said.
Another passenger in the students car was injured in the wreck and taken to a hospital, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.
Stowers is charged with vehicular homicide, hit-and-run resulting in death, traveling too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane and driving with a suspended license. He remains held without bond at the Athens-Clarke County jail, records show.
