An Uber driver was hit and killed when he stepped backward into a road while on a job call.

An Uber driver who went to pick up stranded Greyhound bus passengers on I-75 was killed when he was hit by a car near the interstate, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Paul Russell Bonney, 39, of Houston County, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight Saturday, according to the GSP report.

Bonney was one of two Uber drivers who responded to calls from passengers on the bus, which broke down on I-75 North in Peach County, according to the GSP. Another Greyhound bus was called, but an “extended estimated time of arrival” prompted passengers to individually call for Uber drivers, the GSP said.

Bonney left his vehicle and walked to the west shoulder of Dunbar Road in order to help passengers cross over the fence that separated the road from I-75. As a vehicle drove by, Bonney “took a step backward into the southbound lane” of Dunbar Road and was hit by the vehicle, the GSP said.

The driver, Jonathan Wimberly, 19, of Macon, said he saw a car stopped in the northbound lane with its hazard lights on, according to the GSP. Then he “suddenly saw a person wearing dark clothing step backwards into the roadway.”

Wimberly said it happened so fast that he hit the person seconds after he saw him step into the road.

The other Uber driver on the scene was standing with his back to the southbound lane and “felt the wind” of Wimberly’s car go by. He didn’t realize Bonney was killed until law enforcement arrived.

The GSP is investigating.
