Two brothers are in custody after a Saturday night incident that began with three people shot and ended with a chase and a car crash, Cherokee County authorities said.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said deputies responded to Canton Street in Canton at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, finding three men — ages 25, 27 and 39 — shot in the knee, face and hip, respectively. Their injuries were non-life threatening, and they told police that two men they knew pulled up in a gray Ford Mustang, “started shooting at people” and drove off.

“A deputy patrolling nearby spotted the Mustang moments later on Lucky Street and attempted to pull the vehicle over but it refused to stop,” Baker said in an emailed statement. “A short chase north on Highway 140 and down Pea Ridge Road occurred before the driver of the Mustang … lost control and struck a telephone pole.”

Both men in the car — brothers Craig and Courtney Pitts — were injured in the crash and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Baker said shortly after noon that Craig Pitts had been released from the hospital and taken to jail on charges including three counts of aggravated assault and various weapons charges.

Courtney Pitts remained “in custody” at the hospital, Baker said.

A possible motive for the shooting was unclear.
