Police in DeKalb County are seeking the people, possibly two men, who stole thousands of dollars worth of electronics and other items from an ambulance while the medical technicians worked on a patient in a nearby home.

Items such as car keys, wallets, debit cards and Social Security cards were taken last week in the incident on Soapstone Road, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“It’s even more egregious,” police spokesman Lt. Lonzy Robertson said, “to steal from somebody who’s trying to do their job and they’re trying to help somebody else.”

Some residents wondered whether it was a setup, but the patient that the emergency workers were treating told Channel 2 that she was indeed sick.

Police called it a crime of opportunity.

“When they saw it was unlocked, they took what they wanted,” Robertson said.

Residents are concerned.

“It makes you think a lot, makes you keep your doors locked,” resident Frederick Montgomery said. “Even the paramedics are getting robbed."
