The man accused of shooting a Troup County deputy has been booked into jail after he was released from a hospital, authorities said.
Matthew Edmondson, 28, had been in a Columbus-area hospital since Monday’s incident involving Deputy Michael Hockett, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Stewart Smith said.
Edmondson is charged with criminal attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and two counts of interference with government property, Smith said.
Hockett went to Edmonson’s home to check on him after his father said his son had a psychotic episode, according to Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff.

"When the deputy arrived, he exited his vehicle to go around a fence toward the house and heard what he described as a banging sound," Smith said immediately after the incident.
When Hockett went to investigate, Edmonson allegedly fired at him, officials said.
“The deputy then retreated, at which time the individual got into a truck and began driving toward the deputy,” Smith said. The suspect then got out of the car, fired shots at the deputy and the two exchanged gunfire, Smith said.

Edmonson barricaded himself in his home for about six hours but was taken into custody without incident, officials said.
Hockett is on administrative leave until the investigation is concluded.
