The man accused of shooting a Henry County high school basketball standout last month was apprehended Wednesday in Clayton County.
Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill issued an email alert Wednesday evening saying that Jahmal Deshad Holman had been arrested at the Sleep Well Hotel on Davidson Parkway. Clayton authorities helped Henry County police track down Holman, 20, who is charged with aggravated assault in connection with the May 13 shooting of Devale Johnson.
“Clayton County Police Department assisted Henry County units in taking down the vehicle that Holman was riding in,” Henry police Lt. Joey Smith said, “and Holman was arrested after a short foot chase.”
Johnson, an 18-year-old member of the Stockbridge High School basketball team, was shot in the lower back during an after-hours altercation in a wooded area near Eagles Landing High School. The shots were fired during a fight that “had something to do with a female,” Henry police Lt. Joey Smith said at the time.
“They were going to meet to fight, have a brawl, and the brawl turned into somebody getting shot,” Smith said.
Johnson was originally treated at Atlanta Medical Center, but Smith said Wednesday evening that the teenager was “still in rehabilitation” at the Shepherd Center.
Johnson, who had previously accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Cincinnati State, tweeted Wednesday afternoon that he was “finally back walking.”
“Now it’s time to get back in basketball shape,” he wrote.
